More than 10,000 runners will race through Churchill Downs on April 25 in the Kentucky Derby Festival Humana miniMarathon and Marathon, snagging a once-a-year lap under the twin spires—complete with Derby-week buzz, iconic Louisville sights, and a finisher perk for opening day.

Often referred to by organizers as “Kentucky’s other big race,” the event gives participants the rare opportunity to run inside the historic racetrack, home to the Derby’s iconic twin spires.
Around Mile 8, runners enter the infield and complete a loop along the track itself.
With the Derby just days away, horses may be on-site for final workouts, offering runners a glimpse of contenders preparing for the two-minute spectacle that defines American horse racing.
The miniMarathon began in 1974 with 301 runners.
The full marathon distance was added in 2002, becoming Kentucky’s first major USA Track and Fieldcertified marathon.
In 2026, the marathon marks its 25th running.
The course starts on Main Street and winds past landmarks including Old Louisville, Whiskey Row and the Muhammad Ali Center. The half marathon is known for its flat profile, while the full route stretches through Southern Parkway and Iroquois Park, with modest rolling hills.
All finishers this year receive free admission to opening day of the Churchill Downs Spring Meet by presenting their medal at the box office.
