65,000 Runners Line Up in Copenhagen Behind the Fastest Half Marathoner in History.
Copenhagen hosts the World Athletics Road Running Championships on Sept 19-20, 2026, with the half marathon, 5K, and mile world titles plus 65,000 mass runners.
On September 19 and 20, Copenhagen will host the World Athletics Road Running Championships.
The event will crown world champions in three distances: the road mile, the 5K, and the half marathon.
It will also line up an estimated 65,000 mass-participation runners behind the elite fields, the largest participatory road-running event in Danish history.
The Format, In Plain English
Saturday, September 19, is the shorter-distance day.
The women's road mile world final starts at 10:10 a.m. local time, followed by the men's at 10:30 a.m.
The women's 5K world final runs at 1:10 p.m., with the men's 5K after it.
Sunday, September 20, is the headline day. Women's half marathon at 9:10 a.m., men's at 9:45.
The mass half marathon starts at 9:47 a.m., two minutes behind the elite men.
Six World Titles, One Weekend
Every distance has both a men's and women's world title on the line.
That is more world titles decided across a single 24-hour block than any other road event on the World Athletics calendar.
It is the second edition of the merged championships. The first was in Riga in 2023.
The Half Marathon: The One Everybody Watches
The men's half marathon world record currently belongs to Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo at 57:20, set at the Barcelona Half in February 2026.
Or at least it did, until August, when Yomif Kejelcha ran 56:51 in Buenos Aires to take it off him.
The two men have traded the record three times in 18 months.
A world title with both men on the same start line is what Copenhagen is set up to deliver.
The Copenhagen Half Course Is Fast
The championship half marathon uses the same course as the 2024 Copenhagen Half.
Nearly 30,000 runners have already tested and approved that course.
It is flat, wide, and passes some of central Copenhagen's most photographed landmarks.
In a championship where the field is drafted-up and pace-controlled, that layout is close to ideal for a fast time.
Who Can Actually Race
Every recreational runner can enter the 5K and the road mile at Copenhagen 26.
Both events run on Saturday, and both put mass runners on the same course as the world final.
The half marathon entries were distributed through a lottery in March 2025.
That distance is sold out. A resale portal is scheduled to launch later this year for entry transfers.
The Mass Half Marathon Cap Is 35,000
The half marathon alone will start 35,000 mass participants behind the elite field.
That is comparable in scale to a mid-tier Marathon Major.
Combined with the 5K and mile mass fields, total participation runs to about 65,000 across the two days.
What This Weekend Actually Decides
The road mile is the newest of the three world titles.
It is faster than a track mile, less predictable than a 1500m, and consistently produces surprising winners.
The 5K is a compressed version of a 10K championship, decided in the final 800 metres almost every time.
The half marathon, given the current record trajectory, is the one where a genuine sub-57-minute world championship result is plausible for the first time in the history of the discipline.
Which would make Copenhagen 26 the fastest championship half marathon in history.
The Weather Question
Copenhagen in September averages 12 to 17 degrees Celsius.
That is close to the physiologically optimal window for road-running performance.
Wind, not heat, is the variable to watch. A crosswind on the harbour section could change the outcome of every race on the weekend.

Broadcast information is confirmed closer to race weekend and typically distributed through national federations.
A world championship 21.1 kilometres, in a fast city, with the two fastest half marathoners in history both entered, is not the kind of race that comes around often.
The last time it did, Kiplimo and Kejelcha were not yet trading world records like tennis serves. Now they are.
For the mile and 5K fields, the depth is quieter but no less loaded.
The women's road mile world record is 4:16, and the men's is 3:52, both set in the last two years since World Athletics ratified the event.
Any winning time under those marks in Copenhagen would set a new global standard for the discipline. Which is exactly the trajectory the road mile has been on since it entered the championship programme.
That is a lot of racing packed into 30 hours.
