Despite less-than-ideal training, Ed Whitlock continues to break records, adding the mile to his impressive collection of over 80 age-group records.

Ed Whitlock, an 85-year-old running legend from Milton, Ontario, set a new world record for the mile in the 85-89 age group with a time of 7:18.55 at the Cambridge Classic Mile. He broke the previous record of 8:04.7, which had stood for 31 years.

In addition to this mile record, Whitlock set a half marathon age-group world record of 1:50:47 in April. He holds more than 80 world records for various distances ranging from 1500 meters to the marathon.

Despite his recent successes, Whitlock has faced challenges with his training. He had to take a break after his half marathon due to knee issues and only resumed running three weeks prior to the mile record attempt. He also experienced neck soreness during his comeback.

“I am really a long way from being in peak condition. I am not as fit now as I was earlier this year,” Whitlock wrote in an email. “I am relieved the mile went as well as it did, rather than being ecstatic about the result.”

Just three days after setting the record, Whitlock ran another mile in 7:22.28 at the London Pacers Galloping Goose Mile, narrowly missing another record.

Whitlock is known for his unique training regimen, primarily consisting of long, easy runs around a paved loop in a cemetery near his home. At his peak, when he ran a 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, he would run for three hours a day. Currently, when his training goes well, he aims for 90-120 minutes daily.

Additionally, Whitlock holds the mile record for the 75-79 age group with a time of 5:41.80.

Update: Ed Whitlock passed away at the age of 86. Known for his extraordinary achievements, including breaking the mile world record for the 85-89 age group and holding over 80 age-group records, Ed's legacy will forever inspire runners of all ages. His unwavering dedication and remarkable spirit in the face of challenges have left an indelible mark on the sport. Rest in peace, Ed Whitlock – your incredible journey and contributions will never be forgotten. Cheers to your incredible spirit and dedication, Ed!
