Nicole Teeny: The Runner Who Beat Eight Horses and Inspired a Nation

Despite battling epilepsy, the 38-year-old runner beat eight horses in a 50-mile race, showcasing determination and grit. Her inspiring story has captivated the running world and redefined what’s possible in ultramarathon challenges.

Humans aren’t known as the fastest species on Earth—at least not in short sprints. Animals like cheetahs and horses can easily outpace us over short distances.

But what about endurance? Can a human outlast a horse over a long course? For Nicole Teeny, a 38-year-old runner from Tacoma, Washington, the answer is a resounding yes.

Nicole achieved what many would consider impossible: she outran eight horses in an ultramarathon, showcasing the incredible potential of human endurance.

This achievement was no accident.

It stemmed from a lifelong passion for running, which began in her elementary school years and was reignited after reading Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.

A particular chapter in the book, discussing Daniel Lieberman’s "Endurance Running Hypothesis," sparked a dream in Nicole: could she actually beat a horse in a race?

Overcoming Life’s Challenges

Nicole’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. At 32, she was diagnosed with epilepsy after experiencing her first seizure.

She described these seizures as feeling like a stampede of wild horses, a metaphor that ultimately fueled her determination to keep chasing her dream.

Her story resonated with countless people online, inspiring admiration and encouragement. “What an incredible accomplishment,” said one supporter. Another added, “She’s awesome and an inspiration!”

Despite the hurdles, Nicole maintained her focus.

She continued training and eventually secured a spot in the "Ride Like The Wind" race—a 50-mile endurance challenge around Big Hill Lake in Kansas.

The Race Against Horses

The race wasn’t easy.

Horses had an initial advantage with their faster acceleration, but as the event progressed, they were required to take mandatory vet checks and breaks.

This gave Nicole the opportunity to catch up. Fueled by grit and determination, she pushed forward relentlessly, eventually crossing the finish line ahead of eight horses.

While Nicole didn’t win the race overall, her achievement was monumental. She had proven that humans, with enough endurance and resolve, can rival nature’s fastest creatures.

Reflecting on the experience, she said, “I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so strong, so powerful. It was one of the most joyous events of my life.”

An Inspiration for Many

Nicole’s story isn’t just about beating horses; it’s about overcoming life’s obstacles and achieving the unthinkable.

As the founder of Teeny Motion Pictures, she also uses her platform to share her journey and motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter how improbable they may seem.

Her achievement continues to inspire countless fans, who celebrate her resilience and determination. “This is just so cool. You rock,” wrote one admirer. Another added, “Oh wow… I love this story.”

Nicole Teeny’s accomplishment serves as a reminder of the boundless potential of the human spirit, proving that with enough determination, even the most extraordinary dreams can become reality.
