Track Talk Sparks Debate: Has Nico Young Overtaken Grant Fisher, and Can Josh Hoey Ever Beat Cooper Lutkenhaus?

May 19, 2026

An insane US indoor weekend didn’t just drop fast times it detonated two arguments: did Nico Young just pass Olympic medalist Grant Fisher as America’s top distance man, and could Josh Hoey really spend a career chasing teenage phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus?

A record-breaking weekend on the US indoor circuit has ignited two bold debates: has Nico Young moved ahead of Olympic medalist Grant Fisher in the American distance pecking order, and will Josh Hoey ever defeat teenage sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus head-to-head?

The conversation followed a string of standout performances. Cole Hocker lowered the American record in the mile. Nico Young delivered a blistering 26.06 final lap to win the 3000 meters over Yared Nuguse at the Sound Running meet. Seventeen-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus clocked 1:44.03 in the 800 meters, a new world U20 record.

On the LetsRun Track Talk podcast, co-host Robert “Rojo” Johnson did not hesitate. After Young’s victory, he argued that the reigning US 10,000-meter champion has now surpassed Grant Fisher as the top long-distance runner in the country. Young already owns a Diamond League win, and his closing speed indoors suggests an expanded tactical range. Critics point to Fisher’s Olympic medals, superior personal bests, and sustained championship resume.

The 800-meter debate may be even more provocative. Josh Hoey opened his 2026 season with a world record 1:42.50. Yet Rojo floated the idea that Hoey might never beat Lutkenhaus over a lifetime of racing, citing the teenager’s trajectory and recent head-turning performance.

Records fall quickly, but hierarchy is personal, and every breakthrough forces the sport to reconsider who truly holds the crown.
