Trail Super Shoes Are Rewriting Who Wins Ultras, and It Is Not Who You Think

Western States is being won by runners in their early 30s. Hardrock is being won by a 50-year-old. Trail super shoes explain the split, and it changes who peaks when.

Three weeks apart in the summer of 2026, ultrarunning ran two of its biggest races.
On June 27, at Western States, Vincent Bouillard, 32, and Jenn Lichter, 30, broke both course records. Lichter did it in her first ever 100-mile race.
On July 11, at Hardrock, Ludovic Pommeret, 50, and Courtney Dauwalter, 41, broke both course records. Pommeret's time cut more than 21 minutes off his own record from 2024.

The reason is not the runners. It is the shoes and the ground under them.

The Split Nobody Quite Explains Out Loud

Marathon Handbook reported the emerging pattern in a piece on ultrarunning peak age just after Hardrock.
Their argument, backed by earlier peer-reviewed work on masters endurance, is simple.
The more runnable the course, the younger the winner. The more technical the course, the older the winner.
Super shoes are the reason that split has widened.

What Trail Super Shoes Actually Do

Road super shoes changed marathoning by pairing a stiff carbon plate with an energy-return foam.

They reward turnover

The plate and foam add efficiency at higher cadences. Younger legs, on average, produce and sustain those cadences longer.
The advantage compounds over 100 miles.

They only help on ground that lets them work

On smooth single-track and mellow fire roads, the plate returns energy on every push-off.
On chossy scree, hands-and-knees climbs, and river crossings above 12,000 feet, the plate does nothing.
The runner's body has to do the work.

Western States Is Now the Runnable Race

Western States is the most runnable of the big 100-milers. It has climbs and heat, but the fastest sections are on trail your grandmother could jog.
That is the exact terrain trail super shoes are designed for.
The 2026 course records went to runners in their early 30s, a demographic that historically was still learning how to pace a 100.

What that changes for younger runners

Ten years ago, a first-time 100 by a runner in her twenties would have been a survival mission. In 2026, it was a course record.
The tool did not remove the physiology. It just moved the ceiling on what the physiology could express.

Hardrock Refuses to Be Fixed

Hardrock is 100.5 miles with roughly 33,000 feet of climbing and an average elevation above 11,000 feet.
You use your hands. You wade rivers.
Long sections are power-hiked, not run.
On that course, a carbon plate is dead weight.

Altitude tolerance. Descent quads.
Pacing wisdom accumulated across decades of long races.
Every one of those improves or stays stable well into a runner's forties and beyond.

Dauwalter, at 41, has now taken four Hardrock titles in four starts.
The race rewards exactly what she has spent a decade building: an unusual ability to sit in prolonged discomfort at high altitude without falling apart.

What the Peak-Age Research Actually Says

Long before Pommeret's Hardrock hat trick, work in the Frontiers in Physiology journal was already showing that endurance performance peaks later the longer the event.
That work is hosted through the NIH National Library of Medicine.
Marathons peak in the late twenties to early thirties. 100Ks and 100-milers peak later.
Multi-day and mountain events push the peak into the forties and beyond.

What This Means For Your Racing

Most runners reading this will not race Hardrock or Western States. The lesson still applies.

Match the shoe to the course, not to the trend

A carbon-plated trail shoe on a technical rocky race is a bad tool. A traditional low-drop grippy shoe on a smooth flat trail is leaving speed on the table.
Pick the shoe for the ground you will actually cover.

Match the race to the phase of your career

If you are 28, on a runnable course, in the right shoes, this is your speed window. Take it.
If you are 48, choose the technical stuff. That is where your accumulated pacing and durability are worth the most.

Do not confuse the tool with the training

A super shoe cannot substitute for the base you build in your easy weekly miles. It can only convert base into speed on the day.

The Bigger Picture

The story of Western States and Hardrock in 2026 is not that the sport got younger or older.
It is that different tools now favour different bodies on different ground.
That is a more interesting version of ultrarunning, not a diluted one.
It means younger runners have a legitimate path to the podium at the smooth races.
And it means runners over 40, who thought their competitive window had closed, still have a decade of hard mountain races in front of them.
The mountain does not care what is on your feet. That is the whole point.
