Zara’s new Trail running push is turning heads fast: a full Zara Athleticz kit, a $169 carbon-plated shoe, and a bold bet that fast fashion can credibly enter an eco-minded sport fueling a fierce debate about performance, values, and sustainability.

Zara is stepping off the runway and onto the trail. Through its Zara Athleticz label, the fast fashion giant has launched a dedicated trail running collection that includes technical apparel, a hydration vest, trail shoes, and a $169 carbon plated “Long Distance Running Sneaker.”
The move has sparked a sharp debate across the running world.

Trail running continues to grow globally, with millions participating in races and a footwear market projected to reach nearly $15 billion within the next decade. For Inditex, Zara’s parent company, the category represents a fast expanding segment with cultural cachet and commercial upside.
The company also made a headline grabbing hire: Norwegian ultramarathon runner Patrick Stangbye as curator of Zara Athleticz.

Stangbye is a respected figure in the outdoor space, previously linked to premium hiking and trail brands. His involvement surprised many and triggered accusations of selling out, alongside arguments that influence from within may drive better design decisions.
The carbon plated shoe generated particular scrutiny.
While its specs mirror higher priced models from established brands, reviewers questioned its weight and ride quality. Others raised concerns about accessibility, sustainability, and whether fast fashion aligns with trail running’s environmental values.
Zara has made sustainability commitments, but critics note that emissions across the fast fashion sector remain high. Trail running, for many, is tied to protecting the landscapes it depends on.
