Marathon Alternatives If You Didn't Get Into London

Don’t let a missed London ballot stop your marathon dreams. Explore world-class races and discover the perfect alternative to elevate your running journey.

Every year, runners eagerly await the results of the TCS London Marathon ballot: a simple yes or no that can make or break a long-held dream.

For many, a negative outcome means postponing the chance to conquer the iconic 26.2 miles, especially when nearly half a million hopefuls competed for just 18,000 entries.

Luckily there are plenty of exceptional alternatives that can deliver an equally remarkable experience, if not even more rewarding.

Waiting for a coveted London spot may test your patience, but there are many other world-class races to explore.

Some runners choose the charity route to secure a place in London, which offers a unique experience, though it demands significant time and effort in fundraising, not a path for everyone.

If you’re new to marathon running, consider building your resume with one or two races first.

When? 31 May 2025

A top European race, the Stockholm Marathon takes runners through the streets of the Swedish capital built on 14 islands.

It’s a two-lap course that takes in the very best of Stockholm – from the forests of the Djugarden Royal Park to Parliament House – with much of the route being on the city’s numerous canal paths.

The race finishes at the 1912 Olympic Stadium, home to a whopping 83 track and field world records, so keep a little in the tank for a sprint finish.

2. Rotterdam Marathon

Where? Rotterdam, Netherlands

When? 13 April 2025

Rotterdam is not high on anyone’s list of must-visit European cities.

But every spring, thousands of runners flock to this modern, industrial port and city to take part in its marathon. They are drawn by a pancake-flat course and the knowledge that the organizers, despite a limited budget, put on a fine race.

Crowd support doesn’t compare to New York or Boston, but the city does get behind the race and practically closes down on race day.

Rotterdam was one of the first marathons to adopt chip timing, and the event is constantly trying to innovate and challenge the idea that only major cities can have great marathons.

3. Paris Marathon

Where? Paris, France

When? 13 April 2025

It is the largest running event in France in terms of finishers and is typically among the five largest marathons in the world.

The marathon begins along the Champs-Élysées, runs southeast through the city to the Bois de Vincennes, heads back through the city along the River Seine, and finishes on Avenue Foch.

4. Boston Marathon

Where? Boston, United States

When? 21 April 2025

Often hailed as one of the world’s most celebrated and elite races, the Boston Marathon has been a Boston tradition since 1897, taking place each year on Patriot’s Day.

As a member of the prestigious World Marathon Majors, it’s notoriously difficult to secure a spot, yet those who do are met with cheers from over half a million enthusiastic fans.
